The study compared survival rates of TGCV patients in Japan who received tricaprin with those who did not. The findings involved 22 patients who received tricaprin and 190 controls, with 81 controls matched to the tricaprin group for baseline characteristics.
Hirano, the principle investigator for the Japan TGCV study group, noted that the positive effects on symptoms persisted, with improved heart muscle function and a reversal of structural changes. Patients initially had heart failure, but the 3- and 5-year survival rates were considerably higher in the tricaprin group, at 100%, compared to 78.6% and 68.1% in the control group, respectively. Some patients on hemodialysis also showed positive results with tricaprin, a group that typically faces a poor prognosis.
