Heart Failure Twins Demand Equal Access to Cardiac Care in Northern Ireland
Twin Sisters Face Heart Treatment Disparity
Twin sisters Nicole and Farrah are both living with heart failure, but they receive different treatments because they are in separate health trusts in Northern Ireland. Nicole, living in a Southern Trust area, has access to “life-changing” cardiac rehabilitation. In contrast, Farrah, who lives just 32 miles away in a Northern Trust area, was discharged eight months after her diagnosis without receiving any rehabilitation support. This discrepancy has left her feeling “jealous, angry, upset, and scared.”
Different Experiences in Treatment
Identical twins, Nicole and Farrah share many physical traits and both suffer from acute heart failure, where the heart struggles to pump blood effectively. Nicole was diagnosed in January after multiple visits to doctors about her breathlessness. Farrah received her diagnosis in March. While Nicole participates in rehabilitation sessions that offer exercise guidance and emotional support, Farrah has not received similar help. She expresses frustration over her lack of access to life-saving treatment.
Nicole states that cardiac rehab has restored her confidence and quality of life. She now finds joy in activities she once performed. In contrast, Farrah struggles with fear and uncertainty about her condition and capabilities. She emphasizes the need for expert supervision in exercise to maintain her health safely.
Variability in Trust Offerings
The heart treatment services differ significantly among the health trusts in Northern Ireland. Some trusts provide cardiac rehabilitation to all heart failure patients, while others set specific criteria. The Northern Trust currently limits rehabilitation to patients who have experienced an ischaemic event, which is a blockage of blood flow to the heart. In contrast, trusts like the Southern and South Eastern Trusts offer rehabilitation to all heart failure patients.
The Department of Health is aware of these differences and is consulting stakeholders to improve access to cardiac rehabilitation services across all trusts.
Health Recommendations
Dr. Patricia Campbell, a heart failure specialist, states that cardiac rehab can be as critical as medication for patients. She highlights the need for awareness around heart failure symptoms, encouraging anyone with breathlessness, fatigue, or swelling to consult their GP.
The sisters wish for increased investment in health services and better continuity of care for patients with heart conditions. Their story highlights the need for equitable healthcare access for all, regardless of location.
