Rising Heart Failure and Vascular Disease Deaths: A Pharmacist’s Role

Pharmacy Times interviews Zia Ul Haq, MPH, MBBS, about a recent study revealing a concerning trend in cardiovascular mortality.
The Reversal of Progress
A retrospective analysis of U.S. mortality and health trends over the past two decades indicates that deaths from heart failure and vascular disease are increasing after years of decline. Zia Ul Haq, MPH, MBBS, cautioned that while his study highlights this trend, it doesn’t pinpoint the underlying causes.
“Our study dose not look at the risk factors or the root causes that may lead to this trend,” Ul Haq explained to Pharmacy Times. “Tho, it’s crucial to comment on the broader body of research related to potential root causes.”
Potential Contributing Factors
Ul Haq identified several factors potentially contributing to the rise in cardiovascular mortality, including increased obesity rates, a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and the growing use of vaping products. These factors are all known contributors to cardiovascular disease.
He emphasized the need for further research to fully understand these patterns, stating, “There is a need for further research to help explain these patterns based on the evidence we currently have.”
Pharmacists: A Critical Role in Prevention and Support
pharmacists are uniquely positioned to address this growing public health concern, according to Ul Haq. He highlighted their crucial role in improving access to quality healthcare and optimizing medication management.
“The role of the pharmacist is very crucial, especially when it comes to providing accessibility and access to quality health care,” ul Haq stated. “Many patients with cardiovascular disease also have other comorbidities and are often prescribed multiple medications. This raises challenges related to adherence and polypharmacy-areas where pharmacists’ expertise is essential.”
Beyond medication management,Ul Haq stressed the importance of patient education. Pharmacists can empower patients by explaining potential side effects, treatment options, and new therapies, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
Ul Haq underscored the importance of identifying and addressing cardiovascular risk factors. “Pharmacists have a important role to play in this effort through prevention, education, and ongoing patient support,” he concluded.
