Uppsala, Sweden-A recent study from Uppsala University indicates that beta blockers, commonly prescribed after a heart attack, may elevate the risk of ⁢depression⁣ in patients who do not have heart failure. The research casts doubt on the necessity of universal beta blocker prescriptions for all‍ post-heart attack patients.

Philip Leissner, a doctoral student in cardiac psychology⁤ and lead author of the study, stated that the research revealed a‍ connection ⁤between beta blocker use ‍and increased depressive symptoms in heart attack survivors without heart failure. He added‍ that beta blockers offer no⁢ life-sustaining benefits for this patient group.

Beta ⁤blockers function by mitigating the effects of adrenaline on the heart. While they have been a standard treatment for heart attack patients for decades, their role is now being re-evaluated due to the emergence of new treatments. This is notably ⁢true⁣ for patients whose hearts maintain normal pumping function post-attack, meaning they do not develop heart failure. Researchers aimed to investigate whether beta blockers ⁢contribute⁤ to anxiety or ⁣depression, given prior evidence linking them to adverse ⁣effects ⁤like depression, sleep disturbances, and nightmares.

The study, spanning from 2018 to 2023, involved 806 heart attack patients without heart failure. half received beta blockers, while the ⁣other half did not. Among those taking beta blockers, ⁣about 100 had been on the medication prior ⁤to the study. Researchers noted more pronounced depression symptoms in this subgroup.The findings build upon a larger Swedish study earlier in the year‍ that found beta blockers did not protect against relapse or death in‍ similar patients.

⁣ “We⁣ found that beta blockers led to slightly higher levels of depression symptoms ⁤in patients who had had a heart attack but were not suffering from heart failure. At the same time, beta blockers have no life-sustaining function for this group of⁣ patients,” said Leissner.
