Garda Presence and Funeral Details in Athy

An Garda Síochána maintained a heavy public order presence in Athy, County Kildare, on Friday, August 21, 2026, during the funeral service for 15-year-old Joe Carthy, according to reporting by the Irish Independent and The Irish Sun. Carthy was one of five teenagers who died following a head-on collision on the M9 motorway on Sunday, August 16, 2026, after the vehicle they were traveling in was driven the wrong way down the road.

According to The Irish Sun, officers maintained checkpoints on the roads leading into Athy alongside a visible presence around the church. The security measures followed a high-level security meeting held amid public concern over the crash circumstances and potential disorder.

A white horse-drawn carriage carried Carthy’s gold coffin to the church, where mourners gathered wearing white T-shirts bearing an image of the teenager. Outside the venue, an outdoor screen displayed photographs and videos while music played, and a blue carpet lined the approach to the steps.

Officiating clergy extended condolences to the teenager’s family during the service, stating, We gather with sorrow in our hearts, as reported by The Irish Sun.

Wider Impact of the M9 Motorway Crash

The tragedy claimed the lives of five teenagers in total: Joe Carthy, 15; Jack Kennedy, 17; Jeremy O’Brien, 18; Kamil Pustkowski, 17; and 16-year-old Alex McCarthy, whose funeral was scheduled for later on Friday, August 21, 2026, according to the Irish Independent and The Irish Sun. Carthy had been in a Tusla residential placement, as reported by The Irish Times.

The other vehicle involved in the collision carried a child and three women from the same family—identified in reporting by The Irish Sun as Ella Hendricken, Niamh Kinsella, Alma Kinsella, and Alma’s seven-year-old son Yemi. All four sustained serious injuries and remain hospitalized. A community vigil in support of the family is scheduled to take place in Carlow on the evening of Friday, August 21, 2026.

The fatal collision has prompted increased scrutiny regarding dangerous driving enforcement, social media content regulation, and the provision of State care for children, according to The Irish Sun. Meanwhile, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) published guidance regarding wrong-way motorway driving after initially stating it had no such advisory on record, noted the Irish Examiner.
