An Orange Heavy Rain Warning is in effect across northern New Zealand as a slow-moving low-pressure system delivers intense downpours, triggering flash flooding risks and local river alerts, according to MetService and Auckland Emergency Management.

Forecasters warn that localized downpours could produce rainfall rates of 25mm to 40mm an hour in parts of Auckland and Northland, creating hazardous driving conditions and localized surface flooding. Auckland Emergency Management has activated its flood alert system for the Mahurangi River near Warkworth as water levels rise. Authorities have specifically advised residents and motorists to avoid Falls Road, particularly sections crossing the river that are vulnerable during high water events.

According to MetService meteorologist Katie Lyons, the severe weather is driven by rain bands associated with a low north of Northland. The system is moving southeast over the North Island, bringing heavy rain to Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula, the Bay of Plenty, and northern Gisborne/Tairāwhiti. While general rainfall rates are expected to hover between 15mm and 25mm an hour, Lyons noted that concentrated bursts will not hit every location equally, making sudden flash flooding a primary concern for unprepared communities.

South Island Wintry Blast and Road Closures

While the North Island contends with torrential rain, the South Island is experiencing a starkly different weather hazard with a blast of cold air, according to RNZ, the NZ Herald, and the Otago Daily Times. Snow warnings have been issued near sea level across parts of the lower South Island, forcing the closure of key alpine routes including Milford Road (State Highway 94) ahead of forecast snow.

According to reporting from the Otago Daily Times, the powerful cold front has also brought gale-force winds that blew over a caravan in the south. Snow warnings additionally cover the Crown Range Road between Queenstown and Wānaka, where motorists face difficult driving conditions. In contrast, Christchurch is escaping the heaviest of the wintry weather, experiencing a relatively warm week by comparison, according to The Press.

Emergency Guidance and Contact Information

Emergency management agencies are urging residents in affected northern regions to clear gutters, drains, and stormwater outlets around their properties to prevent avoidable surface flooding. Auckland Council advises that blocked public stormwater drains or localized flooding can be reported by calling 09 301 0101. Anyone facing an immediate threat to life or property should dial 111 for emergency services.
