Porto Santo, Madeira – The Portuguese island of Madeira is experiencing a deluge of rain, with Porto Santo bearing the brunt of the downpour. As of Sunday afternoon, the island recorded a staggering 20.4 millimeters of rainfall per square meter, with a remarkable 19.8 millimeters falling within a single hour.
This intense rainfall, concentrated in a short period, has prompted concerns about potential flooding adn landslides.While the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow weather warning for the north coast of Madeira and porto Santo, the sheer volume of rain has pushed the situation close to an orange alert level.
São vicente,another municipality on the north coast,also experienced heavy rainfall,accumulating 19.9 millimeters as midnight. santana, further west, recorded 18.9 millimeters.”The heaviest downpour occurred between noon and 1 p.m., significantly impacting Santana, São Vicente, and Porto Santo,” local officials reported.
While other parts of Madeira also saw rainfall, the amounts were considerably less. Caniçal recorded 8.9 millimeters, Pico do Areeiro saw 3.8 millimeters, and Madeira Airport accumulated 3.4 millimeters. The Funchal Observatory and Monte stations reported no rainfall.
Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to exercise caution, avoid unneeded travel, and stay informed about weather updates.
