A Kona storm system has triggered widespread flash flood warnings and road closures across Hawaii, bringing intense rainfall to multiple islands. As of April 11, 2026, radar indicates that the heaviest rainfall over Oahu has diminished, although the state continues to address the impacts of the severe weather system.

The storm system produced heavy rain bands that caused significant flooding and infrastructure disruptions. According to weather.com, the heaviest rainfall was recorded across the eastern side of the Big Island, where totals over a 72-hour period generally ranged between 2 and 8 inches, with isolated totals exceeding 12 inches.

The flooding resulted in several emergency incidents and closures. On April 7, 2026, emergency managers reported water flowing over the Hana Highway on Maui. On the same date, water was reported entering a home in the Puna district near Hawaiian Paradise Park on the Big Island. Hana High and Elementary Schools were temporarily closed on April 7, 2026, due to flooding.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that the heavy rain triggered flash flood warnings and road closures across the state. Further road closures were reported on the Big Island on April 8, 2026.

Environmental Context and Rainfall Totals

The severity of the current flooding was exacerbated by previous weather events. Weather.com noted that much of Hawaii was already saturated following destructive flooding in March 2026, meaning relatively small amounts of additional rainfall could lead to further flooding.

Long-term rainfall data indicates an unusually wet period for several regions. Since March 1, 2026, Honolulu has recorded over one foot of rainfall, which is approximately six times the average amount for that period. Kahului has seen more than 20 inches of rainfall since March 1, 2026, which is about a foot and a half above normal; this contributed to Kahului experiencing its wettest March on record.

Additional rainfall totals across the state were estimated to be between 1 and 5 inches as the storm system progressed.

Current Status and Forecast

Hawaii News Now reports that the Kona storm is currently diminishing, although more showers are expected. While the most intense rainfall bands were expected to last into the early weekend of April 11, 2026, before tapering off, the threat of heavy rain diminished by the weekend.

According to KHON2, light showers are expected to linger over Oahu through April 14, 2026. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Honolulu has also issued a Special Marine Warning as part of its ongoing monitoring of the coastal and weather conditions.
