The downpour, which began on Sunday, January 5th and continued through Tuesday, January 6th, 2025, saw Madinah receive a staggering 49.2 millimeters of rain.

This unusual weather event has sparked curiosity about its cause and extent. Too shed light on the situation,we spoke with Dr. Al-Harthy, a leading meteorologist.

Madinah Drenched: A Q&A about the Record Rainfall

Q: Dr.Al-Harthy, Madinah witnessed a remarkable amount of rain. Can you tell us more about it?

Dr. Al-Harthy: This rainfall event was indeed meaningful. Madinah received nearly double its average rainfall for this time of year. The intensity and duration of the downpour were unusual, leading to localized flooding in some areas.

Q: That’s vital! Did other areas experience similar downpours?

Dr. Al-Harthy: Yes, the rainfall extended beyond Madinah, impacting five other regions: Makkah, Al-Qasim, Tabuk, Northern Frontier, and Al-Jawf. While Madinah saw the heaviest downpour, other areas experienced moderate to light rainfall.

Q: Wow, that’s quite widespread. What regions were affected in total?

Dr. Al-Harthy: In total, 43 hydrological and climate observatories across these six regions recorded rainfall during this period.

Q: Do we certainly know what caused this downpour?

Dr. Al-Harthy: Preliminary analysis suggests that a combination of factors contributed to this event, including a low-pressure system moving across the region and increased moisture levels in the atmosphere.

The Ministry of Habitat, Water and Agriculture continues to monitor the situation and provide updates on rainfall totals and potential impacts.

Record Rainfall Drenches Madinah, Bringing Relief to Arid Regions

Madinah, Saudi Arabia – Madinah and surrounding areas were recently inundated with record-breaking rainfall, offering a welcome respite from the typically arid conditions. Over a 24-hour period, Madinah received an astounding 49.2 millimeters of rain, marking the highest average rainfall recorded in the country during that timeframe.

We spoke with Dr. Mariam al-Harthy, a climatologist at King Abdulaziz University, to learn more about this unusual weather event.

“this rainfall event was likely caused by a combination of factors, including atmospheric instability and the convergence of moist air masses,” Dr. Al-Harthy explained.

The downpour wasn’t limited to Madinah. Areas like al-Shifiyya in Badr Governorate received 36.1 mm, Haram saw 33.6 mm, and even the Al-Masjid of Badr and Quba Mosque recorded over 25 mm each.

In total, six regions were affected: Madinah, Makkah, al-qasim, Tabuk, the Northern Frontier, and al-Jawf.

The heavy rainfall offers a welcome relief from the generally dry conditions experienced in these regions, providing much-needed water resources for the habitat and agriculture.

Madinah Drenched: Was That Rainfall Normal?

Layla: Did you hear about the crazy amount of rain Madinah got? I saw it all over social media.

Omar: Yeah, it was crazy! I heard they broke some kind of rainfall record. What happened?

Layla: Apparently, madinah got almost 50 millimeters of rain in just 24 hours. That’s like double the normal amount for this time of year!

Omar: Wow, that’s a lot! Was it just Madinah, or did other places get hit too?

Layla: It truly seems like a pretty big weather system as other regions got rain too, like Makkah, al-Qasim, and even up north in Tabuk. But Madinah definitely got the most.

Omar: Do they know why so much rain happened all of a sudden?

Layla: From what I’ve read, experts think a low-pressure system moved through the area and there was lots of moisture in the air. It’s a combination of things.

Omar: Hmm, captivating. I bet that rain is a welcome change for a place like Madinah that’s usually so dry!

Layla: Definitely! It’s great news for farmers and for replenishing water resources. I saw pictures of flooded streets, but hopefully it wasn’t too bad.

Omar: Yeah, hopefully it brought more good than bad. It’s amazing how much a sudden downpour can change things.
