HEHUAN MOUNTAIN, Taiwan – A picturesque blanket of snow has transformed Taiwan’s Hehuan Mountain into a winter wonderland, but the beauty comes with a price: a temporary closure of a popular mountain road. The Central District Maintenance Engineering Branch of the Highway Bureau announced the closure of a section of provincial Highway 14A, a scenic route through the mountainous region, starting at 6 p.m. tonight. The closure will remain in effect untill 7 a.m. tomorrow.

Snowfall has blanketed Hehuan mountain, leading to road closures for safety.

The affected section stretches from the 18-kilometer mark at Kuifeng to the 41.5-kilometer mark at Duling. This precautionary measure is due to the formation of ice on the road surface, especially at higher elevations where temperatures hover near freezing.

“The section of Provincial Highway 14A from Hehuanshan Kunyang to Duling has been impacted by a cold air mass,” explained a representative from the Central District Maintenance Engineering Branch. “Residual snow on the roadside is not melting easily, creating potentially hazardous conditions for drivers.”

Earlier today, the Highway Bureau restricted vehicle access to sections of Provincial Highway 14A, requiring vehicles to be equipped with snow chains. This restriction remains in place for the stretch from Wuling to Songxuelou.

The closure is expected to impact the transportation of agricultural produce and fruit. to mitigate this, the highway bureau plans to allow large trucks registered for agricultural transport to access Guguan starting at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

A final decision on reopening the road to all traffic will be made tomorrow morning at 7 a.m., based on weather and road conditions.

Q&A: Snow-Blanketed Hehuan Mountain Road Temporarily Closed

Janet: Did you hear about Hehuan Mountain? It’s covered in snow!

Mark: Really? That’s beautiful! I bet it looks like a winter wonderland up there.

Janet: It does, but it’s also causing some problems. They’ve had to close part of Provincial highway 14A.

Mark: Oh no, why’s that?

Janet: Apparently, the snow is combined with freezing temperatures, so there’s a lot of ice on the road. They’re worried about drivers’ safety.

Mark: Makes sense. Do they know when it will reopen?

Janet: They’re planning on keeping it closed until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. They’ll check the conditions again then and decide if they need to extend the closure.

Mark: I imagine that must be affecting people who need to travel for work or even just to go to town.

Janet: Without a doubt. It also impacts farmers trying to get their produce to market. The Highway Bureau is trying to help by allowing some large trucks through later tonight, but it’s still a disruption.

Mark: It sounds like a tricky situation.

Janet: Definitely. Hopefully, the weather improves quickly so they can reopen the road soon.
