An orange cardboard cockatoo perching on an empty seat inside Australia’s Parliament House on October 26 marked the return of federal lawmakers following an alleged vehicle attack on Independent MP Helen Haines that resulted in the amputation of both her legs, 1News reported. The 43-year-old Indi MP was struck repeatedly by a four-wheel drive outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, northern Victoria, on October 19. While her remains in a stable condition in a Melbourne hospital, her first words upon waking from doctors were expressions of gratitude and deep concern for her staff, community, bystanders, first responders, and medical personnel.

Tributes Flow in Canberra as Parliament Returns

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led emotional tributes in the House of Representatives, describing the shock of the incident as a stone in our hearts. 1News reported that Albanese praised Haines for an irrepressible twinkle in the eye that hinted at real inner strength. Crossbench colleagues Zali Steggall and Monique Ryan grew visibly emotional during the parliamentary session, referring to Haines as the matriarch of the crossbench and a voice for respectful political debate. Steggall placed an orange card silhouette of a cockatoo, representing the birdlife of north-east Victoria and Haines’s campaign colors, directly onto her vacant chair. I ask myself that question all the time, she said. Helen, please come back to us.

Not all speeches met with universal agreement across the chamber. According to reporting by The Guardian, crossbenchers Monique Ryan and Zali Steggall criticized Opposition Leader Angus Taylor for delivering a speech they characterized as tone deaf. Ryan told ABC TV that Taylor failed to read the room by questioning whether political words directly influence actions. Steggall expressed personal disappointment with the speech, arguing that lawmakers must acknowledge a clear link between rhetoric and political violence. There is a link between our words and actions, she said. I did not feel that Angus Taylor read the room when it comes to the lesson that Helen would like us all to learn.

Court Proceedings and Accused Attacker Background

The man accused of ramming the federal lawmaker, 43-year-old Tarrawingee resident Brendan Nugent, appeared in court to face multiple charges. The Conversation reported that Nugent was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, the federal offense of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, and cultivating and processing cannabis. Nugent’s lawyer, Chirag Patel, told the court that his client had suffered a concussion and experienced the neurological condition idiopathic transverse myelitis, which Patel stated affected his mental health while unmedicated.

Transverse myelitis is an inflammatory condition of the spinal cord that can cause severe nerve pain and psychological stress, though experts emphasize that medical records do not establish a direct causal link to the alleged attack. ODT reported that authorities are continuing to investigate potential motivations behind the incident, noting that Nugent had posted extensively on social media regarding political issues prior to October 19.

Charity Fundraiser Surpasses One Million Dollars

Outside the parliamentary debate, public support for the injured lawmaker manifested through significant financial contributions to a charitable cause. 1News and ODT reported that a fundraiser established by Haines’s family on Wednesday in lieu of flowers had surpassed AU$1.2 million, equivalent to about NZ$1.48 million, in donations for Save the Children by Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, independent politicians announced plans to sign the Compassion in Politics Australia pledge, committing to treat colleagues with honesty, respect, and compassion in honor of Haines’s parliamentary legacy.
