Helmet-Gate: NFL Refs Spark Outrage with Reversed Penalty Call on Eagles’ CJ Gardner-Johnson
Eagles’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson Flagged for Unsportsmanlike Conduct, but Officials Reverse Decision
The Philadelphia Eagles were leading the Atlanta Falcons late in the fourth quarter and had to decisively stop a Kirk Cousins-led offense from 4-1 with 5:38 left in the game.
Cousins took the snap and passed the ball to running back Bijan Robinson. The second-year player was stopped in his tracks by Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. As the defensive back tried to celebrate the play, he appeared to take off his helmet.
NFL executives thought so too, and threw a flag at Gardner-Johnson. A new set of downs was made and the drive extended. Gardner-Johnson and his teammates were able to convince the officials that the helmet had accidentally been blown off his head.
If the decision is upheld, a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct is applied.
Fans were not convinced that Gardner-Johnson intentionally removed his helmet after stopping Robinson.

Instead, the Eagles, who were leading 18-15 at the time, took the ball on offense and tried to run out the clock until the end of the game. Philadelphia took the lead by finishing the next drive with a field goal. But the cousins marched the Falcons drove down the field for a touchdown. The extra point put the team up 22-21 with less than a minute left on the clock.
