Herbert Sits Out Chargers’ Practice With Ailing Ankle, Thigh
Herbert Dealing with Ankle Sprain, Thigh Contusion After Chiefs Loss
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is facing another injury setback after suffering a sprained left ankle and thigh contusion in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Herbert sat out Wednesday’s practice to address the injuries, which occurred on separate plays during the hard-fought divisional matchup. While he expressed optimism about the severity of the ankle sprain, he acknowledged the pain was notable enough to warrant rest.
“I would say that this one is probably not as severe [as the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2],” Herbert said. “It’s definately painful enough to be able to miss a practice, but I feel like I’ve been able to move around a little bit better this week than I did after Carolina, where I was put into a boot and had difficulty walking.”
The ankle injury happened on the Chargers’ opening drive when Herbert was tackled by Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna. The NBC broadcast showed Herbert grimacing on the sideline as trainers taped his ankle.
“It was tough to play with,” Herbert admitted. “It was one of those things that we kind of talked about where we kind of limited some of the runs. I didn’t feel great running out the pocket.”
Later in the second quarter, Herbert suffered a thigh contusion after being hit midair by linebacker Nick Bolton while attempting a deep throw. despite the impact, Herbert returned to the game and finished without apparent limitations.
Chargers coach Brandon Staley emphasized the importance of Herbert resting and allowing the training staff to address his injuries.
“He’s one of those types of guys where football is the treatment, is the medicine,” Staley said.
However, Herbert ultimately prioritized his health, working with the medical staff instead of pushing through practice.
“If I felt like I could have practiced at 100 percent and make sure that everyone’s getting the full-speed rep, I definitely would’ve,” Herbert said. “I didn’t think I was able to do that. Trainers didn’t think I was able to do that today,so we were all on the same page with that.”
This latest setback adds to a challenging season for Herbert, who missed two weeks of training camp with a plantar fascia injury and battled through a high ankle sprain earlier this year.
Despite the recurring injuries, Herbert remains determined and focused on his recovery.
“It could be a lot worse,” he said.
