Heroes of the Diamond: Japan’s U-23 Baseball Team Returns Triumphant After World Cup Victory
The Japan U-23 World Cup Winning Amateur Team Returns in Triumph
September 17, 2024 - The Japanese amateur national team, which won the 5th U-23 (under 23) Baseball World Cup for the third time in two consecutive tournaments, returned to Japan from Shaoxing, China, where the tournament was held.
Speaking to reporters at Narita Airport, manager Tomoyasu Kawaguchi expressed his joy, saying, “Frankly, I’m very happy.” The tournament took place from September 6th to 15th, with 12 countries and regions participating. Although Japan lost to Puerto Rico in the first round, they went on to win seven straight games and advance to the finals.
They also won the rematch against Puerto Rico in the final, comfortably beating them 5-0. After losing the first game, Coach Kawaguchi vowed to his players, “We’ll bounce back from the second game and face Puerto Rico again in the finals,” and that’s exactly what happened.
Coach Kawaguchi analyzed the reason for the victory as, “I thought it was important to have communication, and the players embodied that.” Looking ahead, he said, “Our biggest goal is to win the 2026 Asian Games. With that in mind, I want to build a strong team.”
