A four-month-old pet goose named Goosey woke his owner in Fort Bend County, Texas, after noticing a backyard barn had caught fire, according to reporting by KHOU 11. The overnight incident, which occurred last Tuesday, resulted in no injuries to the animals inside the burning structure.
How the Texas Barn Fire Started and Stopped
Owner Bert Gerber had fallen asleep on the couch in the middle of the night when Goosey began letting out startling honks that the family had never heard before, according to KHOU 11. Surveillance footage captured the young bird standing in front of the backyard barn as it was engulfed in flames.
I just casually came outside and I saw a fire billowing out of there,
Bert Gerber recalled to KHOU 11. I grabbed a water hose and ran over there.
Bert extinguished the blaze before it could spread further. According to the family’s statements reported by KHOU 11, all the animals housed inside the barn were accounted for and remained completely safe following the incident.
If I hadn’t been woken up, I think in a couple more minutes, it would have been … out of control,
Bert said, according to KHOU 11.
Goosey’s Arrival and Future Plans
The goose had only been a part of the Gerber family since Mother’s Day, when the household visited a hug-a-goose event, according to KHOU 11. Bert’s wife, Chelsea, initially did not want a webbed-foot pet, but their daughter, Elaine, fell in love with the bird immediately.
When we got him, he was so small and he was just so fluffy,
Elaine Gerber told KHOU 11. When I got to pet his head, he would just rest his head on my arm and it just made me tear up.
Following the late-night rescue, the family stated they are considering getting Goosey a companion named Lucy, as reported by KHOU 11. Elaine also mentioned potential plans for future breeding, telling the outlet, And then we’re going to get babies. I can start my own business.
