JAKARTA – The Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGMS) of PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BRI) has appointed Hery Gunardi as President Director, succeeding Sunarso, who held the position since Sept. 2, 2019.
Gunardi’s appointment is seen as a natural progression, given his successful leadership of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), where he oversaw significant performance improvements. BSI has become the world’s ninth-largest Islamic bank by market capitalization.

Gunardi stated that leading BSI and BRI share a common goal: building the nation’s economy through the banking industry. He noted the difference lies in the sectors, with BSI focusing on Islamic banking and BRI emphasizing the MSME segment.

Career Highlights
Gunardi, who holds a Master of Business Governance from Oregon University, began his banking career at Bank Bapindo in 1991 as a research and progress staff member.
He progressed through various roles, including problem credit analyst and Head of Debt Sinting Subdivision, before joining the Treasury Bapindo Division in 1998.
His career continued at Bank Mandiri,where he held positions such as Director of AXA Mandiri Financial Services from 2003 to 2006.
At Bank Mandiri, he also served as Director of Micro and Retail, Consumer director, Director of Distribution, Director of Small Business & Network, and director of Consumer & Retail Transaction.
His highest position at bank Mandiri was as the representative of the Managing Director and Acting Director when Kartika Wirjoatmodjo was appointed as Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) II.
Prior to his appointment at BRI, Gunardi played a key role in the merger of three state-owned Sharia banks – PT Bank BRISyariah Tbk, PT Bank Syariah mandiri, and PT Bank BNI Syariah – to form BSI.
He was appointed as the first President Director of BSI on Dec. 15, 2020, and officially assumed the role on Feb. 1, 2021.

Under Gunardi’s leadership, BSI achieved significant financial results. By the end of 2024, BSI’s total assets reached Rp408.61 trillion, a 15.55% year-on-year increase from Rp353.62 trillion in 2023.
This growth was supported by a 11.46% year-on-year increase in third-party funds (DPK) to Rp327 trillion and a 15.88% year-on-year increase in financing to Rp278 trillion.
BSI’s net profit in 2024 reached Rp7.01 trillion, a 22.83% year-on-year increase from Rp5.7 trillion in 2023. This growth exceeded the national banking industry’s growth rate, which faced challenging macro and microeconomic conditions.
BSI ranks sixth in the national banking industry in terms of assets, with a growth rate of 15.55% annually, and fifth in terms of DPK.
BSI also ranks ninth among global Islamic banks in terms of market capitalization, achieving this milestone ahead of schedule in 2024.
