Son Heung-min Speaks Out Against UEFA’s Expansion
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has voiced his concerns over UEFA’s recent expansion, which has led to an increase in the number of games played by European football teams.
At a press conference for the 2024-2025 UEFA Europa League match, Son Heung-min expressed his frustration, stating, “No one wants to see players struggling with injuries. There are too many games and a lot of distance to travel. It’s so hard to take care of ourselves.” He emphasized that players are not robots and that the current schedule is unsustainable.
Son Heung-min continued, “The number of games must be reduced. Only then can we play football at a higher level. That should be the goal. We play 50, 60 games, sometimes 70 games. When the game schedule approaches, players must run. There are too many games going on.” He stressed the need to prioritize the quality of the game over the quantity of matches.
UEFA’s recent expansion has led to the creation of a new Nations League and the introduction of the Conference League, which has added to the already crowded schedule of European football teams.
As a result, many athletes have spoken out about the risks of injury and burnout due to the demanding schedule.
Son Heung-min’s comments echo those of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who also criticized UEFA’s expansion, stating, “No one is asking players to increase the number of games played.” Alisson emphasized the need for UEFA to listen to the concerns of players and prioritize their well-being.
Son Heung-min’s comments come as Tottenham prepares to face Karabakh in the Europa League group stage and Manchester United in the Premier League.
