Israel’s President Denies Involvement in Pager Bombing Case, Says No Intention of War with Hezbollah
Israeli President Isaac Herzog was interviewed by British Sky News host Trevor Phillips on the morning of the 22nd to answer questions about conflicts in the Middle East. Herzog denied Israeli involvement in the attacks on the 17th and 18th in Lebanon, and insisted that Israel does not want a total war with Lebanon.
With the peace of the country at stake, Iran’s support for Lebanon’s Hezbollah has escalated fighting this week, with Hertzog acknowledging that the situation “could escalate dramatically.” He said that Israel is “not interested” in a war against Lebanon, but that Lebanon has been hijacked by Hezbollah and that Israel is “fighting for the whole free world.”
Herzog also denied that Israel was involved in the pager and walkie-talkie bombings on the 17th and 18th. This event resulted in 37 deaths and around 3,000 injuries. Herzog said he “unequivocally refutes any connection between Israel and this incident and the source of its actions” and said Hezbollah “has many enemies.”
Herzog said Hezbollah is “heavily armed by the evil Iranian empire” and claimed Iran “wants to conquer the Middle East and advance to Europe and other parts of the world.” Herzog was also asked if he would attack Iran with missiles. He said that Israel “has always shown” that it will protect its people and “eliminate any threat to their existence.”
