Hezbollah Spokesperson Killed in Israeli Strike in Beirut
Mohammed Afif, the spokesperson for Hezbollah, died in an Israeli strike on Beirut. The attack occurred in the city center. Lebanese security sources confirmed Afif’s death, and a Hezbollah official provided this information to the Associated Press.
Afif was reportedly at the headquarters of the pro-Hezbollah Baath Party during the strike. This was only the fourth Israeli strike inside Beirut since the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The strike on Sunday hit the Ras al-Nebaa area during the day without any warning for evacuation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not comment on the incident.
After a major Israeli operation that forced Hezbollah underground, Afif became one of the group’s few public figures. He was a close adviser to Hezbollah’s late leader, Hassan Nasrallah. He frequently delivered speeches amid the destruction in southern Beirut, which has suffered from intensified attacks since Israel began a new offensive on October 1.
This airstrike on Afif came at a time when Israel increased its military efforts against Hezbollah, seeking to achieve a ceasefire. On the same day, Israeli strikes in Beit Lahiya, Gaza, killed at least 50 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry. These attacks hit buildings where displaced Palestinians were sheltering.
Eyewitnesses reported families began to recover bodies from the rubble, as the local civil defense was unable to operate due to ongoing attacks. In another incident, Israeli strikes targeted al-Bureij in central Gaza, killing 23 people. Residents described a terrifying night filled with cries from small children.
The IDF continues its military campaign in Jabalya, aiming to dismantle Hamas infrastructure. This operation has displaced many Palestinians and resulted in the deaths of dozens. Since the operation began, the Israeli military reported the death of 20 soldiers in northern Gaza, including four last week.
The offensive in Gaza coincided with Israel’s operations in southern Lebanon, where troops engaged with Hezbollah near the village of Chama. Israeli airstrikes continued to hit Beirut for the sixth consecutive day. The IDF issued new evacuation warnings for areas known to house Hezbollah members.
