Massive Security Breach Hits Hezbollah in Lebanon
A series of explosions rocked several Lebanese regions, including the southern suburbs of Beirut, in the biggest security breach since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah last October.
Simultaneous Explosions Kill Nearly 3,000 People
Portable communications and radio equipment used by Hezbollah members exploded simultaneously, killing nearly 3,000 people and injuring hundreds more.
The blasts occurred amid an unprecedented security and health alert in the country since the blast at the port 4 years ago, with hospitals overwhelmed with injured people.
Israel’s Involvement in the Explosions
Israeli sources confirmed that the explosions continued for about half an hour, with Israel accessing Hezbollah’s wireless communications system and blowing it up, according to Channel 13.
A New Shipment of Explosive Devices
People in the know reported that the affected pagers were from a fresh consignment that Hezbollah received in recent days, with hundreds of fighters using such devices.
A Hezbollah official speculated that malware could cause the devices to overheat and explode, with some people feeling the heat from their pagers and getting rid of them before they exploded.
Malware: A Sophisticated Attack
Michael Horowitz, head of intelligence at Le Bec International, said the malware was likely caused by the pager’s battery overheating and exploding or charging, which was planted in the device and later detonated.
He added that the attack was very sophisticated, especially if it was a physical breach, as it meant Israel had access to the products of these devices.
Hezbollah Members Wounded and Killed
Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath sources reported that hundreds of Hezbollah members were wounded, some seriously, by the sudden explosion of these devices, with the number expected to reach more than a thousand.
Hezbollah members were seen bleeding in the southern suburbs of Beirut, with the party asking all its members to immediately abandon these devices.
Call for Blood Donation
The Ministry of Health announced that a large number of various injured people were arriving at the hospital, urging citizens who own wireless communication devices or similar pagers to stay away from them until the truth about what is happening is clear.
The ministry also requested blood donations, with hospitals requesting citizens to donate blood to help the injured.
