Recent research published in the European Heart Journal demonstrates a significant link between liver fat and a higher cardiovascular age – essentially, how old your heart appears to be based on health indicators. This finding suggests that the type of fat in the body is more critical than overall weight when assessing heart health risk.
Unlike previously thought, liver fat isn’t simply passive storage. It’s an active tissue that releases inflammatory substances directly impacting the heart and blood vessels. These substances contribute to cardiovascular aging and increase the risk of heart problems.
Exercise Isn’t Enough to Eliminate Risk

The Limitations of BMI
The study also casts doubt on the reliability of the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a predictor of heart aging. Researchers found that 31% of women classified as overweight according to their BMI actually fell into the normal category for total fat mass. For men, this figure was 11%.
This discrepancy arises as BMI doesn’t account for where fat is stored in the body. Two individuals with the same BMI can have drastically different health risks depending on their fat distribution.A person carrying more weight around their abdomen and in their liver is at higher risk than someone with a similar BMI who stores fat primarily in the hips and thighs.
