Xbox Game Studios will publish Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game Physint, according to statements from Microsoft and Kojima Productions released on September 10, 2026. The announcement follows a sudden cancellation of the project by PlayStation Studios in June 2026, ending a partnership that began when the title was publicly revealed during a PlayStation State of Play showcase in January 2024. PlayStation Cancels Physint and Ends Collaboration
PlayStation Studios announced on September 10, 2026, that it had decided to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on Physint following careful consideration. According to statements shared by Hideo Kojima, the developer received an unexpected notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June 2026 stating that the project was canceled. The cancellation ended an arrangement that originated at the January 2024 State of Play broadcast, where Kojima appeared alongside Hermen Hulst of Sony to introduce the new intellectual property. At the time, Kojima emphasized his nearly 30-year relationship with Sony and noted that the company’s expertise across games, film, and music would support the development of a next-generation action-espionage title designed to blur the line between media formats.
After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT.
We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game.
On September 10, 2026, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Game Studios had agreed to publish Physint, expanding an existing relationship that already included Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror game, OD.
The creators have options about where and how bring their ideas to life.
It is an honor for us that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT.
This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD.
As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world,
Hideo Kojima
Development Timeline and Project Scope
Physint is designed to serve as a spiritual successor to Kojima’s Metal Gear series, positioning itself as a next-generation action-espionage experience. While concrete gameplay footage and release dates remain unconfirmed, Kojima indicated in May 2025 that the title was approximately five or six years away from completion, placing a potential launch window around 2030. During the Beyond the Strand livestream celebrating the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, the studio released poster artwork for Physint alongside initial casting announcements. Confirmed actors attached to the project include Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe, with further casting details expected as production continues under Xbox Game Studios.
