A retrospective cohort study has found that adults aged 65 and older who receive a high-dose influenza vaccine have a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to those who receive a standard-dose vaccine.
The research, published in the journal Neurology, was led by a team at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston. The study analyzed health data from approximately 165,000 older adults to determine the impact of different vaccine dosages on the risk of dementia.
Findings on High-Dose vs. Standard-Dose Vaccines
The researchers discovered that the high-dose flu vaccine reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in individuals 65 and older by nearly 55% over a period of approximately two years.
This finding builds upon previous research conducted by the same team, which indicated that the standard-dose vaccine was associated with a 40% reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s over a four-year period.
The high-dose influenza vaccine is distinguished by containing four times the antigen—the component responsible for generating an immune response—compared to standard-dose versions.
Because of these properties, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all adults aged 65 and older receive the high-dose vaccine.
Gender Differences and Duration of Effect
While the study found that both men and women experienced a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease after receiving the high-dose flu vaccine, the results varied by gender.

The data suggests that the protective effect appeared to be more consistent and lasted longer in women than in men.
Additional reporting indicates that the association between the high-dose vaccine and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s dementia persisted for the first 25 months following vaccination.
The Biological Link Between Vaccination and Neurodegeneration
The findings contribute to an expanding body of evidence that links vaccination and immune system activity to a reduction in dementia risk.
A leading hypothesis for this link is that inoculation may strengthen the body’s immune defenses while simultaneously dampening inflammation.
Inflammation is believed to play a significant role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and the vaccine may help tamp down the specific inflammatory processes tied to the condition.
