High-Level Diplomacy: To Lam Embarks on Historic US Visit and State Tour of Cuba
General Secretary and President To Lam to Attend United Nations Events and Pay State Visits
General Secretary and President To Lam will attend the Future Summit and the 79th United Nations General Assembly, work in the US, and pay a state visit to Cuba from September 22 to 26.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife will embark on a significant diplomatic journey, marking a crucial moment in Vietnam’s international relations.
The state visit to Cuba was at the invitation of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez and his wife. This visit underscores the strong ties between Vietnam and Cuba, a relationship built on mutual respect and cooperation.
On September 12, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the importance of the Future Summit in a recorded message sent to the high-level event “Global Call for the Future Summit”. He highlighted the conference as an opportunity for the United Nations and multilateralism to affirm their irreplaceable values in the face of great challenges.
General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his hope that the conference would bring new thinking and innovative approaches for the future of the world. He suggested focusing on transformational solutions, including science, technology, and innovation; green transformation; and the transformation of global governance.
Vietnam and the US have recently celebrated the first anniversary of upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The US is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner, with a total import-export turnover of nearly 111 billion USD in 2023, surpassing the 100 billion USD mark for the third consecutive time.
Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960. The state visit of General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife reaffirms the strong bond between the two nations, demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to its traditional friends.
