ABC’s crime procedural High Potential concluded its second season on April 7, 2026, leaving the fate of a primary character uncertain following a major cliffhanger.

The season finale featured a scene in which Morgan Gillory, played by Kaitlin Olson, discovered Captain Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey, gravely injured.

Cast and Production Changes

Following the conclusion of the second season, Steve Howey is leaving the series as a regular cast member. Howey joined the show as a series regular early in the second season under a one-year deal.

Despite his departure as a regular, sources indicate that the cliffhanger regarding Wagner’s condition leaves the door open for Howey to return as a guest star at the beginning of the third season to conclude the character’s narrative arc.

The series is also undergoing a change in leadership. Showrunner Todd Harthan, who led the production for the first two seasons, has departed to focus on the Disney+ live-action series Eragon. ABC is currently searching for a new showrunner to lead the writing team for the next chapter of the series.

Season 2 Scheduling and Viewership

The second season of High Potential premiered on September 16, 2025. While the episode count was increased to 18 episodes from the 13 episodes featured in the first season, the broadcast schedule was marked by several interruptions.

Season 2 Scheduling and Viewership

The series experienced a mid-season break from November 2025 to January 2026. After returning for five episodes, the show entered another hiatus in early February 2026. During this period, ABC aired reruns of Will Trent in the 9 pm and 10 pm time slots.

Other scheduling disruptions included breaks for the State of the Union address and the Winter Olympics. Some viewers noted that the scheduling was irregular, pointing to the airing of a Mother’s Day-themed episode in March, several weeks before the actual holiday on May 15.

Despite these disruptions and the early April finale date—which preceded the May finales of other ABC series such as Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, and Will Trent—the show has seen strong growth in viewership.

Future of the Series

ABC officially renewed High Potential for a third season in March 2026. The decision on whether Steve Howey will return for a guest appearance to resolve the Season 2 cliffhanger will likely be determined by the incoming showrunner and the new writing team.

The series continues to follow Morgan Gillory, an intellectually gifted cleaning woman who serves as a police consultant. The core cast for the series includes:

  • Kaitlin Olson as Morgan Gillory
  • Daniel Sunjata as Adam Karadec
  • Judy Reyes as Selena Soto
  • Javicia Leslie as Daphne Forrester
  • Amirah Johnson as Ava Gillory
  • Deniz Akdeniz as Lev “Oz” Ozdill
  • Matthew Lamb as Elliot Radovic
