Tragedy Strikes Ma’anshan Trail: Hiker Dies After Fatal Fall

Ma’anshan, Hong Kong – A hiking trip turned deadly on Sunday afternoon when a woman in her 50s or 60s lost her life after falling from a cliff on the treacherous Mitian Plank road. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of hiking, especially on challenging adn unofficial trails.

the woman was part of a group of around a dozen friends navigating the notoriously steep and precarious Mitian Plank road. As they descended a near-vertical slope, relying on ropes for support, the woman lost her balance and plummeted approximately 10 meters.

Her companions immediately called for help, and a government Flying Service helicopter was dispatched to the scene. However, the rugged terrain initially hampered rescue efforts. Rescuers eventually located the unconscious woman and airlifted her to the hospital, but she tragically succumbed to her injuries.

The Mitian Plank road has gained notoriety for its danger. In 2021, the Fire Department issued a public warning about the trail’s hazards after a hiker, attempting the route without adequate training, required a complex rescue operation. Firefighters at the time faced falling rocks, some as large as air conditioners, and several sustained injuries.

This latest tragedy underscores the importance of exercising extreme caution and carefully assessing one’s abilities before embarking on challenging hikes.

“It’s a sobering reminder that even experienced hikers can face unexpected dangers,” said a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Hiking Association. “We urge all hikers to prioritize safety, research trails thoroughly, and be prepared for the unexpected.”
