A Devastating Monsoon Season
Himachal Pradesh is reeling from the impact of a relentless monsoon season. As June 20, 2025, the ongoing rains have caused widespread devastation, tragically claiming the lives of 263 people, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA). The scale of the disaster is immense,impacting infrastructure,livelihoods,and the very fabric of communities across the state.

(PTI)”>The primary causes of these fatalities include rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, and electrocution, accounting for 136 deaths. An additional 127 lives were lost in separate road accidents exacerbated by the treacherous whether conditions.
Widespread Damage and Disruption
The torrential rains have left a trail of destruction across Himachal Pradesh. Over 31,000 houses, shops, labor huts, cow sheds, and other structures have been damaged, with many entirely collapsing. The impact on infrastructure is equally severe.
As of August 18, 2025, authorities report that 2,201 roads remain disrupted, severely hindering connectivity. Access to essential services is also compromised, with 2,550 drinking water supply schemes affected and 1,145 power supply lines down, leaving numerous areas without electricity. The estimated financial losses to public property have reached a staggering ₹2,173 crore, marking this as one of the most damaging monsoon seasons in recent years.
District-by-District Impact
The impact isn’t uniform across the state. The worst-affected districts, in terms of road connectivity, are:
- Mandi: 192 blocked roads
- Kullu: 85 blocked roads
- Chamba: 29 blocked roads
Power outages are especially acute in Kullu (543 disrupted transformers) and Mandi (303 disrupted transformers). Water supply is also considerably impacted,with 44 schemes non-functional in Mandi and 11 in Chamba.
Beyond Infrastructure: Impact on Livelihoods
The monsoon’s fury extends beyond physical infrastructure, deeply impacting the agricultural sector and rural livelihoods. A devastating 1,626 cattle have perished, and over 25,700 poultry birds have been lost, representing a significant economic blow to local communities.
Ongoing Risks and Restoration Efforts
Authorities are warning that the risk of further landslides and flash floods remains high, as the rains are expected to continue in several parts of the state. As of this morning, August 18th, 397 roads, including three crucial national highways (NH-305, NH-05, and NH-03), remain blocked. Moreover, 883 distribution transformers and 122 water supply schemes are out of service.
Restoration work is underway on a war footing, but progress is hampered by the ongoing inclement weather. “Our teams are deployed round the clock to restore essential services,but the continuous rain is posing serious challenges,” a spokesperson for the HPSDMA stated.
