The streaming landscape saw a significant shift in viewership the week of January 12, as Netflix’s limited series His & Hers dethroned Stranger Things after the latter’s impressive nine-week reign at the top of Nielsen’s Overall Streaming chart. The Tessa Thompson-led drama captured a remarkable 2.244 billion viewing minutes, signaling a strong start for the series and a changing tide in streaming preferences.

The success of His & Hers isn’t simply about overall numbers; its demographic reach is particularly noteworthy. According to Nielsen data, the 35-64 age group comprised a substantial 55% of its audience, demonstrating appeal beyond younger demographics often targeted by streaming platforms. Black audiences contributed over 26% of the series’ total watch time, highlighting its resonance with a diverse viewership.

The impact of His & Hers extended beyond simply taking the top spot. Half of the titles featured in Nielsen’s Top 10 for the week surpassed one billion viewing minutes, a testament to the continued strength of streaming content. Netflix dominated the chart with five titles, including one shared with other services, solidifying its position as a leading force in the streaming wars. Paramount+ and HBO Max each secured a single spot within the top ten.

While His & Hers ascended, Stranger Things experienced a slight dip, landing at number two with 1.912 billion minutes viewed. This marks the first time in seven weeks, since the debut of its final season in late November, that the series hasn’t held the number one position. The show’s continued strong performance, however, underscores its enduring popularity and cultural impact.

Paramount+’s Landman also saw a boost, climbing to third place with 1.772 billion viewing minutes – its highest performance to date. The final episode of the series accounted for 35% of its total viewership for the week, suggesting a strong finale drove increased engagement. This success is a positive sign for Paramount+ as it continues to build its streaming library and attract subscribers.

Netflix continued to perform well with The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, securing the fourth position with 1.393 billion minutes viewed. The crime thriller resonated particularly with male viewers, who made up 51% of the audience. Hispanic and Black viewers also contributed significantly, representing 26% and 18% of the total viewership, respectively. This broad appeal demonstrates Netflix’s ability to curate content that attracts diverse audiences.

HBO Max’s medical drama, The Pitt, rounded out the top five with 1.158 billion viewing minutes, achieving its best performance yet. The series experienced a two-place jump from the previous week, driven largely by female viewers aged 18+, who accounted for 58% of its watch time. This suggests a targeted marketing strategy and compelling storylines are resonating with a key demographic.

Further down the chart, Netflix’s sci-fi thriller 11.22.63 moved up three spots to number six, garnering 970 million viewing minutes. The shared title The Closer, available on Netflix, Peacock, and Pluto TV, slipped to eighth place with 939 million minutes viewed. Peacock’s The Traitors followed closely behind with 892 million minutes, exceeding its previous high by over 100 million minutes.

Prime Video’s Fallout secured the ninth position with 844 million viewing minutes, while Disney+’s animated series Bluey fell from number five to tenth, with 802 million minutes viewed. This shift highlights the dynamic nature of the streaming landscape, where content popularity can fluctuate rapidly.

The data from Nielsen provides a valuable snapshot of the current streaming environment. Netflix’s continued dominance, coupled with the strong performance of titles on Paramount+ and HBO Max, demonstrates the competitive nature of the market. The success of His & Hers is particularly noteworthy, not only for dethroning Stranger Things but also for its broad demographic appeal. As streaming platforms continue to invest in original content, understanding audience preferences and catering to diverse demographics will be crucial for success.

The week’s data also underscores the importance of finales in driving viewership, as evidenced by the surge in Landman’s numbers. This suggests that compelling storytelling and satisfying conclusions are key to retaining and attracting viewers. The continued success of established franchises like Stranger Things also highlights the value of recognizable brands in a crowded marketplace.
