February 16, 2026 – A sprawling urban redevelopment project is underway in Berlin’s Spandau district, transforming a historic industrial site into a modern, sustainable city district. The project, known as Siemensstadt Square, represents a significant investment of €4.5 billion and is expected to be completed by 2035.

German industrial giant Siemens is playing a central role in the transformation, investing €750 million in the project. The company’s technology will be integral to realizing a carbon-neutral urban district, encompassing planning, development, and optimized operations. The initiative builds upon a foundation stone laid earlier, marking a key milestone in the redevelopment.

Spanning 76 hectares, Siemensstadt Square is one of Europe’s largest urban redevelopment sites. The area’s roots stretch back over a century, originally serving as an industrial hub for Siemens. Now, the vision is to create an inclusive urban district that blends the real and digital worlds, with Siemens technology forming the backbone of its sustainable infrastructure.

The redevelopment isn’t solely focused on new construction. Historic industrial buildings dating back to 1919, located along the Spree River in Berlin-Kreuzberg, are also part of the plan. These protected buildings, covering over 40,000 square meters, are currently almost fully occupied by a variety of businesses, some of which have been operating there for over 100 years. Plans are in place to “further develop” this area, with a building permit already secured over a year ago.

An international architectural firm has been selected to lead the design of the redevelopment, following a competition initiated by the property owners. Details of the winning design have not yet been publicly released, but the selection signals a commitment to innovative and sustainable urban planning.

The Siemensstadt Square project is part of a broader trend of urban redevelopment and sustainability initiatives across Europe. Similar projects, such as the €255 million transformation of the historic FIX complex in Thessaloniki, Greece, demonstrate a growing emphasis on revitalizing urban spaces and boosting city appeal. The Berlin project, however, stands out due to its scale and the significant technological integration spearheaded by Siemens.

The redevelopment also comes on the heels of a $1.4 million federal grant awarded to revive Berlin’s historic Flower Street site, underscoring the city’s commitment to preserving and reimagining its historical landmarks. These initiatives collectively aim to balance the preservation of Berlin’s rich industrial heritage with the demands of a modern, sustainable urban environment.

Siemens’ involvement extends beyond financial investment and technological integration. The company intends to leverage its Xcelerator portfolio of digital innovations to transform the historical industrial site. This suggests a focus on smart city technologies, potentially including intelligent infrastructure management, energy efficiency solutions, and data-driven urban planning.
