This progress brings the long-awaited dream of connecting Kashmir to the rest of India by rail closer to reality. Last month, the ministry hinted that the inaugural run of the Vande Bharat train on this new line coudl take place as early as January 2025.
The USBRL project, spanning 272 kilometers, has been hailed as one of the most challenging railway projects undertaken in India since independence.
Navigating Himalayan Challenges
the route traverses the young Himalayas, presenting numerous geological hurdles. A staggering 97.42 km out of the 111 km Katra-Banihal section consists of tunnels, with the longest, Tunnel T-49, stretching an notable 12.77 km, making it the longest transportation railway tunnel in the country.
Adding to the project’s grandeur is the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab river in Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir. This iconic structure, spanning 1,315 meters with an arch span of 467 meters and a height of 359 meters above the river bed, is a testament to India’s engineering prowess.
Socio-Economic Impact
Beyond its engineering marvels, the USBRL project has considerably contributed to the socio-economic development of the region. The construction has generated employment opportunities and led to the development of over 215 km of approach roads, including a tunnel and 320 small bridges.
Safety First
The ministry has emphasized the project’s commitment to safety, adhering to international standards. All tunnels longer than 2 km are equipped with mechanical ventilation systems to ensure optimal air quality. Firefighting systems, including fire hydrants and extinguishers, are in place in all tunnels, and proper access roads have been constructed to all escape tunnels.
With the completion of track work, the USBRL project is poised to transform connectivity in the region, bringing Kashmir closer to the rest of India and ushering in a new era of progress and prospect.
