Historic Deal on the Horizon: Somaliland Set to Seal Groundbreaking Agreement with Ethiopia
Somaliland Announces End of Negotiations with Ethiopia Amid Somalia Tensions
The breakaway region of Somaliland has announced the conclusion of negotiations on a cooperation agreement with Ethiopia, a move that has been met with resistance from the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs revealed that the negotiations regarding the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Ethiopia have been concluded, and the formal agreement is set to be signed soon.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed earlier this year, grants Ethiopia a plot of land to establish a naval base and port on the Red Sea in exchange for recognizing Somaliland as an independent republic from Somalia.
The move has sparked tensions with Somalia, which has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Somalia considers the deal a clear violation of its sovereignty, with the country’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stating that “Somaliland is part of Somalia under the Somali constitution.”
Somalia has been strengthening its military ties with Egypt, signing a joint military cooperation agreement in August. The agreement has led to the deployment of Egyptian military equipment and troops to Mogadishu, with reports suggesting that Cairo intends to deploy 5,000 troops to the region.
The move has been met with concern from Somaliland, with the foreign minister expressing “serious concerns” about the deployment of Egyptian forces in Somalia.
Regional Implications
The developments in the region have significant implications for the geopolitical landscape of the Horn of Africa. The cooperation agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia has the potential to shift the balance of power in the region, while Somalia’s strengthening ties with Egypt may lead to increased tensions with neighboring countries.
International Response
The international community has been closely monitoring the developments in the region. The African Union has maintained a significant presence in Somalia, with 5,000 troops deployed as part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
