Historic Heart Transplant Performed in Eastern Antioquia, Offering Hope to Patients
El Centro Cardiovascular somer Incare Makes History, Becoming Second Institution in Antioquia to Perform Life-saving Procedure
Medellín, Colombia – In a groundbreaking achievement, El Centro Cardiovascular Somer Incare has successfully performed the frist heart transplant in the Eastern Antioquia region. This milestone not only marks a significant advancement for the institution but also strengthens the healthcare system in antioquia, establishing Somer Incare as the second institution in the department capable of performing such complex procedures.
The recipient of this life-saving transplant is 60-year-old carlos Badavid Madrid from Medellín. Badavid had been battling ischemic heart failure, a condition caused by blockages in his coronary arteries that led to multiple heart attacks over the years. For him, a heart transplant represented the only viable option for survival.
“This transplant is a major step forward for our institution and for cardiovascular medicine in the region,” said Dr. Catalina Gallego, a cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure and the clinical leader of Somer Incare’s Heart Transplant Program. “This advancement will bring new hope to many patients.” Dr. Gallego highlighted that Somer Incare had previously played a crucial role in heart rescues, transporting hearts from various parts of the country to their respective recipients.
The transplant involved a highly specialized multidisciplinary team, including cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, surgical technicians, nurses, and a transplant coordinator. Together, they successfully executed this complex surgery, considered the most challenging in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
Following the operation, Badavid was admitted to the intensive care unit and later transferred to a coronary care unit. There, he received close monitoring to ensure the transplant progressed smoothly and to prevent organ rejection. Rehabilitation will be crucial for badavid to regain his quality of life and return to his daily activities.
In Colombia, only ten institutions are authorized to perform heart transplants, with three located in Antioquia. According to the National Institute of Health, an average of 80 heart transplants are performed annually in the country. Currently, 21 people are awaiting this life-saving procedure nationwide.
“This is a historic moment for medicine in Antioquia and Colombia,” said dr. Rafael Meza Jiménez, cardiovascular surgeon and surgical leader of the program. “It offers hope to patients with advanced heart failure, a condition that continues to rise in the country.”
This transplant was made possible through the collaboration between El Centro Cardiovascular somer Incare and Clínica Somer, an institution that also performs kidney, liver, pancreas, tissue, and bone marrow transplants. This partnership ensures a thorough approach to transplant procedures.”Carlos’s health is progressing positively, and we continue to monitor his rehabilitation process to ensure the best possible outcome,” concluded Dr.Gallego. “We are deeply grateful to the donor family, who have given an invaluable gift: the chance at a new life.”
