Córdoba,Spain – Teh historic Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has reopened to the public after a fire broke out Friday evening, causing what officials are calling “very localised damage.” The blaze, which evoked memories of the 2019 Notre Dame cathedral fire in Paris, was quickly contained by 35 firefighters, averting a potential catastrophe for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fire Contained, Damage Assessed

The fire erupted around 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Friday, sending flames and smoke billowing from the iconic structure. Videos circulating online sparked immediate concern for the architectural gem, which attracts approximately two million visitors annually.

Córdoba Mayor Jose Maria Bellido addressed reporters Saturday morning, confirming that while damage exists, it is largely confined to a single chapel – the Almanzor nave. “There is some damage, notable damage, but it is indeed very, very localised,” he stated. The roof of the Almanzor nave completely collapsed due to the combination of flames and the weight of water used to extinguish the fire.Preliminary estimates suggest the fire damaged roughly 50 to 60 square metres of the building’s 3,000 square meter interior. “Fortunately yesterday a catastrophe was avoided that coudl have meant losing the entire mosque-cathedral,” Bellido added. The Almanzor nave remains cordoned off with waist-high barriers as a precautionary measure.

Cause Under Investigation, Swift Response Praised

Forensic police are currently on-site investigating the cause of the fire. Initial reports from ABC and other Spanish newspapers suggest a mechanical sweeping machine may have been the source of the blaze.

Firefighters continued to monitor the area and cool the walls throughout the night following the fire’s extinguishment, according to Daniel Munoz, head of Córdoba’s firefighting service. Their swift and effective response was crucial in preventing further spread of the flames.

A History Etched in Stone

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba boasts a rich and complex history, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Spain. Originally constructed as a mosque between the 8th and 10th centuries under the Umayyad emir Abd ar-Rahman, it stood as a testament to Islamic architecture in the region.

following the Christian reconquest of Spain in the 13th century under King Ferdinand III of Castile, the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral. Subsequent centuries saw architectural alterations and additions, blending Islamic and Christian design elements into the unique structure it is indeed today.

This incident marks the third recorded fire in the building’s nearly 1,000-year history, with previous incidents occurring in 1910 and 2001.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Remains Open

Despite the damage, the Mosque-Cathedral remains open to the public. Tourists were seen lining up Saturday morning to visit the site, with several fire engines and police present nearby. The cordoned-off Almanzor nave is the only area currently inaccessible to visitors.

The building’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 underscores its exceptional architectural and cultural importance, ensuring ongoing efforts for its preservation and protection for generations to come.
