The Observer: A New Chapter for Britain’s Oldest Sunday Newspaper

Britain’s Guardian Media Group (GMG) has entered into exclusive talks to sell The Observer, the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, to Tortoise Media, a new company founded by James Harding, a former executive at the Times newspaper and BBC News.

Tortoise has committed to investing over £25 million ($33 million) in the editorial and commercial renewal of The Observer over the next five years, providing a significant boost to the weekly newspaper.

A Rich History

First published in 1791, The Observer is one of Britain’s best-known newspapers, with a rich history of publishing notable journalists, including George Orwell. It became a subtitle of the daily Guardian in 1993 following its acquisition by GMG.

Anna Bateson, chief executive of GMG, stated that this sale provides an opportunity for The Guardian to focus on its growth strategy, becoming more global, digital, and reader-funded.

A New Era for The Observer

Tortoise was founded in 2019 by James Harding, who expressed his passion for The Observer’s future, stating that it is one of the biggest names in news. He emphasized the company’s commitment to publishing The Observer on Sundays and building its digital presence.

The Observer, like the rest of the newspaper industry, has faced a decline in print sales, with a circulation of 136,656 copies in 2021. However, its online content remains closely integrated with that of the Guardian.

A Bright Future

Tortoise plans to combine The Observer’s digital presence with its own podcasts, newsletters, and live events, providing a unique and engaging experience for readers. James Harding praised The Observer’s reporting, original thinking, and passionate subjects, including food, music, film, and art.

Harding also referenced George Orwell’s description of The Observer as “the enemy of nonsense,” expressing his excitement to show readers that it still holds true today.

The sale of The Observer marks a significant development in the newspaper industry, with Tortoise’s investment providing a much-needed boost to the weekly newspaper.
