The Chinese team made history by entering the top four of the U23 Men’s World Cup for the first time, surpassing everyone’s expectations. Despite losing to Nicaragua 1-3 in the final match, the team’s overall performance was impressive, and they set a new record by finishing fourth in the tournament.
According to the rules, the results of the group stage are carried over to the super round. The top two teams advance to the gold medal match, and the third and fourth place teams play in the bronze medal match. In the group stage, the Chinese team had 3 wins and 2 losses, and 1 win and 1 loss in the super round.
The Chinese team played well against Nicaragua, the only team that remained unbeaten in the group stage, in the last match of the Super Round, winning 4-0. This historic moment marked the team’s first advancement to the semi-finals of the U23 World Cup.

Head coach Li Wei praised the team’s performance, saying, ”The players always implemented the idea of reducing mistakes in defense and reducing walks by the pitcher, and displayed decisive and precise tactics, which led to exciting and wonderful duels time and time again.”
Starting pitcher Zhao Wei pitched seven full innings and shut out the opponent in the Super Round matchup with Nicaragua. He performed well, using his left-handed advantage to put continuous pressure on the right-handed hitters of Nicaragua.
The players have gained valuable experience from the competition. Zhu Xudong said, “Although my ability is not good enough, I still try my best to run. The biggest gain from the competition in recent days is that I am more brave and fearless, and I am not afraid of any opponent.” Zhao Wei added, “The biggest tactic of the game is psychological warfare. I feel that I am becoming more and more mature after experiencing these competitions.”
