Draper (Great Britain) defeated the 10th seed Andre de Minaur (Australia) in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
Draper, 22 years old and ranked 25th in the world, reached the quarterfinals at last year’s US Open, which was his best result in all four Grand Slam tournaments. In this tournament, he defeated Zhang Zhizhen (China), Bruno van de Zanshurp (Netherlands), and T. Mahacs (Czech Republic) in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals.
In this match, Draper kept attacking against De Minaur who made many mistakes, scoring 11 service aces and winning points 84% of the time when his first serve went in. He recorded 40 winners, far more than De Minaur who hit 21, and broke the serve a total of six times to win the match in two hours and seven minutes.
It has been 12 years since Murray made it to the semifinals of the US Open in 2012. At the time, Murray was the third seed and defeated Fernando Lopez (Spain), Marc Raonic (Canada), Marc Cilic (Croatia), and T. Berdych (Czech Republic) to advance to the final. He went on to win the title by defeating Novak Djokovic (Serbia) in a full set.
Draper will face either top seed J. Sinner of Italy or fifth seed D. Medvedev in the semifinals.
