China Makes History in U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup

The Chinese team has made history by advancing to the top six in the 2024 World Baseball and Softball Federation U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup, held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The team defeated Australia 4-1 and ranked third in the group stage, marking their first participation in the top six of an age-level competition of the same level.

The U23 World Cup is the largest age group competition in the U-series men’s world cup, second only to the adult competition. The competition adopts a 7-inning system, with 12 participating teams divided into two groups for a round-robin group match. The top three teams in each group advance to the super round.

This is the Chinese team’s first participation in the U23 World Cup. Despite being ranked 24th in the world, the lowest in Group A, the team showed momentum in their first match against the British team. After falling behind 0-2, they fought back and dragged the game into overtime, eventually reversing their opponents 5-3.

The match against Australia, ranked 15th in the world, was crucial for the Chinese team to win a ticket to the Super Round. Zhou Yi hit a home run to right field to tie the score, which was also the first home run of the Chinese team in the tournament. Wang Shuai hit a ground ball to the shortstop direction with the Chinese team’s bases loaded, sending Zhang Mingxin back to home plate and helping the Chinese team to overtake the score.

The Chinese team continued to attack, taking advantage of the opponent’s mistakes and Zhu Xudong’s hit to score 2 more points, expanding the lead to 4-1. They relied on excellent defense to maintain the score until the end. After this crucial victory, the Chinese team surpassed the Australian team by virtue of the win-loss record and advanced to the super round with the third place in the group.

Li Wei, the head coach of the Chinese team, said after the game that the team had made significant progress in the five group matches and achieved results beyond expectations. “We are becoming more and more confident, and the players are playing freely on the court. Such performance is due to the strength of the team, and I hope the players can grow up as soon as possible.”

The Super Round will begin on the 12th. The top two teams in the Super Round will advance to the gold medal match on the 15th, and the third and fourth ranked teams will play in the bronze medal match.
