US Open: Zheng Qinwen Advances to Quarterfinals, Repeats Olympic Final Scene
A replica of the Paris Olympics women’s singles final was staged in the fourth round of women’s singles matches at the US Open on September 2, New York time. Chinese player Zheng Qinwen faced Croatian player Donna Vecic in 2 hours 50 minutes, defeating her opponent in 2:1 (7:6 (2), 4:6, 6:2) sets, reaching the quarterfinals for two consecutive years.
Zheng Qinwen, the women’s singles gold medalist in tennis at the Paris Olympics, had her best record in the top 8 at the US Open last year. In the fourth round of the US Open today, she met her Olympic final opponent Vicky Zhi. In the first set, both sides battled to a tiebreaker, Zheng Qinwen settled his mind and gradually took the lead and went ahead with 7:6 (2).
In the crucial deciding set, Zheng Qinwen made quick adjustments and broke the opponent’s serve to take the lead. Vicky later made a series of mistakes and, unsatisfied with her performance, she once again staged the famous scene of “throwing a racket” in the Olympic final and took a kick.
On meeting her opponent in the Olympic final again today, the 21-year-old Chinese women’s player believed that Vicky was difficult to handle on the hard court: “I felt she put a lot of pressure on me today. In Paris, I felt I was in control, and he hit the ball really aggressively today, so it was a great win for me and I enjoyed playing here tonight.”
