Alonso Breaks Valentino Rossi’s Record in MotoGP
The young Colombian scored his 12th win of the season at Buriram, surpassing Valentino Rossi’s record in the weakest class from 1997.
From last Sunday and the race in Australia, Alonso and Rossi were equal, but it was already clear for weeks that the record would fall. “The Doctor”, however, continues to be more successful season after season, given that only 15 races were held during his first championship year.
At the finish line, Alonso was three and a half tenths of a second ahead of Luka Luneta of the Sić58 team, while on the third step of the podium was Colin Vejer, who defends the colors of Intakt, after an incident at the finish line, where he pulled Taijo Furusato the head pulled out.
Even before the start, there was drama in Buriram, as due to the rain and the fact that all practice sessions were run in dry conditions, the race was delayed by five minutes and shortened to 12 laps. So we had a speed race, where Alonso and Ivan Ortola of MT Helmets fought for the win, but the Spaniard made a mistake in the last sector and lost the opportunity to return to the top step of the podium since the beginning of September and race in Britain.
The excitement did not end there, Luneta managed to reach the best position in his career, and at the end there was contact between Vejer and Furusat, who pushed the Dutchman away from his opponent. The Japanese fell in the middle of the start-finish line and thus crossed the finish line and was classified as fifth, behind Ortola, while, interestingly, Vejer’s move was not even investigated.
Far behind, in sixth place, was Boe Motorsports’ David Munoz, ahead of teammate Joel Kelce and Scott Ogden, while Stefano Nepa and Tatsuki Suzuki completed the top 10. Leopard drivers Adrijan Fernandes and Angel Pikeras took part in the battle at the top until the last two laps, and they pushed each other off the rails.
Alonso now has 371 points at the top of the overall standings, 135 more than Olgad and 146 more than Vejer.
The world championship continues next Sunday with the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
