Richardson Hitchins Calls Out Devin Haney After IBF Title Defense
Updated June 15, 2025
Richardson Hitchins, 27, retained his IBF light-welterweight title with a dominant eighth-round stoppage of george Kambosos Jr. at The theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. Hitchins, making his first title defense after defeating Liam Paro in December, showcased his boxing skills in his first hometown headlining fight.
Hitchins (20-0, 8 kos) controlled the fight from the outset, landing significantly more punches than Kambosos. The end came when a left hook to the body sent Kambosos to the canvas in the eighth. Although Kambosos (22-4) beat the count, he was visibly in pain, prompting the referee to halt the contest.
“I’ve been telling the boxing world I was coming, and they should have listened,” Hitchins said after the fight. He also mentioned telling Kambosos’ father to stop the fight if he loved his son, acknowledging Kambosos’ toughness but asserting his own superiority.
Kambosos, 32, a former unified lightweight champion after his upset win over Teofimo Lopez at the same venue in 2021, has now suffered four losses in his last six bouts, including back-to-back defeats to Devin Haney.
Hitchins acknowledged the risks he took to land effective shots. “I knew I had to go to some unsafe places to get some good shots off.I put myself in harm’s way,” he said, adding that while Kambosos landed some good punches, they didn’t deter him from pursuing the finish.
Following the victory, Hitchins immediately set his sights on Devin Haney, who recently moved up to welterweight and defeated Jose Ramirez. Haney responded on X, suggesting a potential fight at 147 pounds.
On the undercard,Brighton fighter Adam Maca made a successful professional debut, securing a second-round knockout victory over Rafael Castillo.
What’s next
Negotiations for a potential fight between Richardson Hitchins and Devin Haney are expected to begin. The bout would be a significant step up for Hitchins and a major attraction in the welterweight division.
