HL7 India’s First Virtual FHIR Connectathon a Success

HL7 India marked a milestone wiht its first virtual FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) Connectathon on July 3, 2020.The event drew significant interest from India’s health IT community, fostering awareness and education around interoperability and standardized data exchange.
The virtual connectathon, a first of its kind in India, received an overwhelming response. It provided a platform for healthcare IT professionals to connect, contribute to FHIR standards progress, and build a community focused on improving healthcare through technology.
The connectathon featured five tracks designed to cater to various experience levels and vocations,covering everything from learning FHIR concepts to building FHIR platforms.

Key statistics from the event include:
- More than 83 companies represented
- Approximately 225 participants
- Five distinct tracks
- Over 10 expert sessions during the pre-connectathon phase
- More than 1,000 hours contributed by track leads and committee members
- A total of 17 hours of event time
The connectathon was structured in three phases: pre-connectathon, connectathon, and post-connectathon.
The pre-connectathon phase included industry leaders and domain experts providing insights into IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise) and HL7 work on FHIR, FHIR profiles, terminology services, and interoperability challenges. Participants also received training and orientation from track leads.
The connectathon itself featured keynote sessions from industry experts, including Grahame Grieve, known as the “Father of FHIR.” Activities included learning sessions and collaboration on India-specific scenarios.
What’s next
Following the connectathon,HL7 India plans to publish HL7 India Profiles for public comment,advance these profiles to a Release 1 stage,and create domain-based implementation guides. They also encourage continued engagement through their Confluence page and Slack workspace.
