Spire Motorsports Fines Hocevar $50,000 for Mexico Comments
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spire Motorsports has penalized Carson Hocevar, levying a $50,000 fine after the driver made disparaging remarks about Mexico City during a recent live stream. The incident occurred in the wake of a NASCAR race held in Mexico last weekend.
Hocevar, 22, issued an apology Sunday night, acknowledging his comments and admitting it was his first time outside the U.S. He said he had relied on negative perceptions of Mexico city.
“I am embarrassed by my comments,” Hocevar stated in his apology.
In addition to the fine, Spire Motorsports is requiring Hocevar to participate in cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.
The $50,000 penalty will be distributed equally among three organizations serving Mexican communities. The recipients are Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross), Un Kilo de Ayuda, and Fondo Unido México (United Way Mexico). Un Kilo de Ayuda focuses on combating childhood malnutrition, while Fondo Unido México supports local NGOs improving education, health, and housing across 22 Mexican states.
Spire Motorsports emphasized the importance of respect within the organization. “These actions are consistent with Spire Motorsports’ core value of RESPECT,” the team said. “Respect is not a slogan. It is a daily expectation.” The team added that hocevar’s comments “did not represent the views of Spire Motorsports, our partners, or NASCAR.”
Spire motorsports informed NASCAR of the penalties, meeting the sanctioning body’s requirements.
