Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund is facing a period on the sidelines due to a muscle injury, potentially impacting the team’s performance in upcoming matches. The injury, confirmed by manager Erik ten Hag, is expected to keep the 21-year-old out for approximately two to three weeks, according to a statement made on February 23, 2024.

Højlund’s absence is particularly notable given his recent run of form, having scored in his last six games before the injury. This streak had positioned him as a key offensive player for Manchester United, and his unavailability represents a setback for the team as they strive to improve their position in the Premier League. He could miss as many as five matches, beginning with the game against Fulham on Saturday.

The injury occurred at a time when Højlund was demonstrating significant progress and adapting to the demands of the Premier League. Ten Hag acknowledged the risk associated with playing at a high intensity, stating, It’s a small injury, two to three weeks. That’s what happened, that is the risk of playing at high intensity and training. It’s not a big injury but he has to wait now for two or three weeks. This highlights the physical challenges faced by players in elite-level football and the potential for injuries even with careful conditioning.

This injury adds to an already substantial list of absentees for Manchester United. Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, and Mason Mount are all currently unavailable, creating further challenges for Ten Hag in team selection and tactical planning. The team is currently without a recognized striker, compounding the difficulties.

The timing of Højlund’s injury is also significant as it potentially rules him out of the highly anticipated derby against Manchester City on March 3. This match is a crucial fixture in the Premier League calendar, and Højlund’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the team.

Ten Hag addressed the issue of squad depth, acknowledging that injuries are a concern but not unique to Manchester United. He stated, Injuries are an issue but other clubs have this and we have to deal with this. I feel we can deal with it better but it’s an issue with the depth of the squad. This suggests that the club may need to address squad depth in future transfer windows to mitigate the impact of injuries.

The recent completion of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal to become a minority owner at Manchester United may also influence the club’s approach to player recruitment and squad building. Ten Hag has indicated that discussions with Ratcliffe and Dave Brailsford are ongoing, focusing on the club’s structures and ambitions. He emphasized the alignment between his own goals and Ratcliffe’s vision for the club, stating, We are very aligned. It totally fits with ambitions I have, ambitions I had when I came in.

Højlund’s injury history has been a concern since his move to Manchester United. He previously missed games due to a hamstring injury during pre-season and in the early stages of the 2024/2025 campaign. Reports from October 15, 2024 indicated concerns over his fitness following the October international break, although he did return to team training ahead of Denmark’s clash with Switzerland.

Prior to the current muscle injury, Højlund had been demonstrating promising form, scoring in seven consecutive appearances. This run of goals had raised expectations among fans and pundits alike, making his current setback all the more disappointing. He had reached a total of 13 goals for the campaign before the injury.

As of March 8, 2024, Højlund provided an update on his recovery, expressing his desire to return to the pitch as soon as possible. He stated, That would be nice. Let’s see, but I’m going to be back as soon as possible. I don’t want to put a date on it because it will just interfere or something, but I think we’re not far off. This suggests that his recovery is progressing, but a precise return date remains uncertain.

In a separate incident, summer signing Leny Yoro is also facing a significant period of absence, expected to be around three months, after injuring his foot during a pre-season match against Arsenal on July 28, 2024. This injury further compounds the defensive challenges facing Manchester United.

Muscle injuries in football are common, often resulting from the high-intensity demands of the sport. These injuries can range in severity, from minor strains to complete tears, and recovery times can vary significantly depending on the extent of the damage. Rehabilitation typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), followed by a gradual return to training and competitive play. The specific rehabilitation protocol will be tailored to Højlund’s individual needs and the severity of his injury.
