This December, music lovers across Latvia can enjoy a variety of holiday concerts featuring the vibrant sounds of big bands. From classic Christmas melodies to original compositions, these performances promise to bring warmth and joy to the season.
Latvian Radio Big Band Embraces Global Sounds
The Latvian Radio Big Band, led by conductor Roberts Martini, is teaming up with internationally acclaimed Nigerian-British jazz, soul, and R&B vocalist olu Onabulé for a series of special performances. Onabulé, known for his collaborations with renowned jazz orchestras worldwide, will bring his unique style to the stage alongside the big band’s powerful sound.
Audiences can catch this exciting collaboration at the Radio SWH Jazz club in Riga on December 13th, the Riga Circus on December 14th, and the Daugavpils Culture Palace on December 15th as part of the “Vienības namam 87!” event series.
latvian Voices Shine in Festive Concerts
The Latvian Radio Big Band will also present a heartwarming program titled “Jazz Music for Christmas” featuring the vocal talents of Paula Saija and Daumants Kalniņš. This concert, taking place on December 17th at the VEF culture Palace and December 20th at the Splendid Palace cinema in Riga, will showcase a blend of Latvian music and jazz interpretations of classic holiday tunes.
The first half of the concert will feature a unique interpretation of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ”The Nutcracker” by legendary jazz composer Duke Ellington.

Daumants Kalniņš will also grace the stage on december 22nd at the Aizkraukle Culture Center, performing alongside the latvian Radio Big Band and the Riga Dome boys’ Choir. The program will feature beloved Christmas melodies by Maestro Raimonds Pauls, a medley of film music, and songs from the “pearl Fisherman” cycle.
In Jelgava, the Jelgava Big Band, led by Rait Ašmanis, will present its traditional Advent concert on December 15th at the Jelgava Culture House. the concert will feature beloved holiday melodies and be enhanced by the beautiful harmonies of the vocal quartet “Neaizmirstulītes.”

The Valmiera Boys Big Band, under the direction of Gunārs Geduševs, will join forces with the Valmiera volunteer Firefighters’ Band for a special holiday concert titled “Our Little Christmas Tree” on December 18th at the Valmiera Culture Center.This unique collaboration will weave together familiar and lesser-known Christmas melodies, creating a heartwarming story of holiday anticipation.
