Holly Hunter Stars in New Paramount+ Series
You can hardly blame the young leads of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for being chaotic. They’re essentially first-year college students, most of them adjusting to life away from their home planets for the first time and figuring out who they want to become. Confused and inconsistent is exactly what they’re suppose to be at this stage.
You can, on the other hand, certainly blame the Paramount+ show itself for being messy. Created by Gaia Violo, the series is a hybrid of sci-fi spectacle and teen drama that’s admirable in its ambitions but shaky in its execution, at least in the first six hours (of 10) sent to critics. But much like Starfleet’s brightest cadets, it’s too full of charm and promise to dismiss outright. You just hope to see it live up to its full potential someday.

Production and Development Status (as of January 15, 2026)
As of January 15, 2026, the Starfleet Academy series is still in development. Deadline reported in February 2024 that the series is intended for Paramount+, but a release date has not yet been announced. Casting announcements are ongoing, and production details remain limited.
The series is being produced by Secret Hideout Productions, in association with CBS Studios. Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Julio Plega are serving as showrunners.
