Latvian Film Director Faces Embezzlement Charges After lavish Spending Spree
A Latvian film director is under examination for alleged embezzlement after prosecutors say he misappropriated approximately $5.5 million from a state-funded film center. The director, whose name has not been officially released by Latvian authorities but is identified as Māris Rinchs in reports by Delfi.lv, allegedly lost a notable portion of the funds through a series of unsuccessful investments and then used the remaining money for personal luxuries.
According to prosecutors, Rinchs initially lost roughly half of the $11 million allocated to him through a series of unsuccessful investments over a couple of months. He then reportedly invested the remaining funds in the cryptocurrency market, briefly realizing a small profit. Though, he subsequently transferred this money to his personal bank account.
Luxury Purchases and debt Repayment
Following the transfer of funds, Rinchs allegedly embarked on a spending spree, purchasing five Rolls-Royce vehicles and one Ferrari, totaling an undisclosed amount. He also spent $652,000 on watches and clothing, according to prosecutors. Further extravagance included the purchase of two mattresses for approximately $638,000 and $295,000 on luxury bedding. Additionally, Rinchs reportedly used $1.8 million to pay off a personal credit card debt.

Investigation and Potential Consequences
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet filed formal charges. However, the alleged actions could result in significant criminal penalties, including imprisonment and substantial fines. Asset recovery efforts are also likely to be pursued to recoup the misappropriated funds. The Latvian national Film Centre has not yet released an official statement regarding the investigation beyond confirming its existence.
