‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot: Will Johnny Depp Return as Jack Sparrow?
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, inspired by the Disney theme park ride, launched in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and keira Knightley. The series, which includes four more films, has earned over $4.5 billion worldwide, making it the 14th highest-grossing film series ever.
A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film has been in development as 2017, but plans stalled partly due to Johnny Depp’s defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. A female-led spinoff starring margot Robbie was also in development but was later canceled, according to the actress.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in May 2022 that they where working on a reboot screenplay. in March 2024, Bruckheimer stated that the reboot is still happening but with a new cast. He noted that rebooting allows them to move faster without waiting for specific actors’ schedules, as was the case with Tom Cruise and Top Gun.
In June 2025, Orlando Bloom hinted at the possible return of some original cast members for the sixth film.
Johnny Depp’s involvement in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was jeopardized after Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse in a 2018 op-ed.Depp was removed from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and Disney also cut ties with him. Depp’s agent, Jack Whigham, testified that the actor was set to earn over $22 million for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 until Disney changed direction following Heard’s article. Depp stated he woudl not return to the franchise,regardless of the compensation offered,though he initially wanted to give Captain Jack Sparrow a proper send-off.Despite his dismissal, Disney continued to feature Jack Sparrow at its theme parks.
When asked about Depp’s potential return, Bruckheimer said in a Sunday times interview, “Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.” This sparked fan backlash, with many threatening to boycott the franchise without Depp.
Margot Robbie was slated to lead a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot film, announced in June 2020. This movie was intended as an original story with new characters, not a spinoff.
