Holyhead Port Closure Extends to January, Disrupting Travel and Trade
Holyhead Port Closure Cripples Holiday Travel, Irish Hauliers Face “Emergency”
Holyhead, Wales – The closure of Storm Darragh“>Holyhead Port, a vital link between Ireland and the UK, has been extended until at least January 15th, throwing holiday travel plans into disarray and leaving Irish hauliers facing a potential financial crisis.
The port, which sustained damage to its Terminal 3 berth during Storm Darragh on December 6th, announced the extended closure to allow for repairs and ensure passenger safety. The decision comes as a major blow to travelers and businesses alike, especially with the busy Christmas season fast approaching.”We understand the significant impact this closure has on trade, passengers, and port customers,” a port spokesperson said. “We are sorry for the disruption this has caused. The safety of our colleagues and customers is our first priority and we will only permit ferry services to recommence once we are sure it is indeed safe to do so.”
Ferry Operators Scramble for Alternatives
Stena Line, one of the major ferry operators using Holyhead, is contacting affected passengers and offering free transfers to choice routes, including Dublin-Liverpool, Dublin-Fishguard, and Belfast-Cairnryan.
However, the closure has sparked concerns about the availability of alternative transportation options, particularly for the estimated 100,000 people who typically return to Ireland for Christmas.
Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates has assured the public that contingency plans are being rolled out. ”We’re identifying spare capacity at other ports across the UK to get ferries to and from Ireland,” Skates said.Irish Hauliers Face “Massive” Impact
The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has warned of a “massive” impact on the industry, with 10,000 freight vehicles typically moving in and out of Holyhead each week.
“Sixty percent of the goods coming into Ireland normally move through the damaged port,” IRHA president Ger Hyland said. ”We have drivers and vehicles lying idle because they are stuck in Holyhead at the moment.”
The IRHA estimates that large hauliers are losing “hundreds of thousands” in turnover per day and is calling for urgent financial support from the government.
“This is an emergency,” Hyland stressed. “We need assistance now to keep Ireland supplied and our fleets on the road.”
Airline Fares Soar, Ryanair Blames Dublin airport Cap
While the Holyhead closure has undoubtedly impacted travel options, Ryanair CEO Michael O’leary has attributed the surge in airfares between Ireland and Britain to the passenger cap at Dublin Airport, not the port closure.
“It’s nothing to do with Holyhead,” O’Leary stated. “It’s entirely to do with a gross shortage of seats in and out of Dublin this Christmas because of the Dublin Airport cap.”
Ryanair still has around 5,000 seats available between now and Christmas Day, O’Leary added, but emphasized that thes would be available at much lower prices if it were not for the Dublin Airport passenger cap.
