Homebase Liquidation: Consumer Protection Secured for Kitchen and Bathroom Contracts in Ireland
Ireland’s consumer watchdog has secured a promise from Homebase liquidators to complete kitchen and bathroom installations or provide full refunds if they cannot.
The liquidators will also honor vouchers in the eight Homebase stores in Ireland while they remain open.
Homebase has entered liquidation, leaving customers who paid for undelivered kitchens and bathrooms as “unsecured creditors.” These consumers risk losing money and support without guarantees.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) intervened, ensuring that customers will either receive their purchased items or get their money back.
Customers holding vouchers should use them quickly to avoid losing value.
Provisional liquidators were appointed after Homebase’s collapse affected stores in both the UK and Ireland. The High Court revealed that the Irish division employs 178 workers across eight stores.
While UK Homebase companies had previously entered administration, the Irish side is managed separately. The company’s directors believe it cannot enter a restructuring process due to its financial situation.
Despite still operating, the future of Homebase looks uncertain. Consumers, worried about potential losses, contacted the CCPC for help.
The CCPC then reached out to the liquidators. After discussions, they confirmed that existing kitchen and bathroom orders would be fulfilled or refunded.
Brian McHugh, CCPC chairman, noted that consumer concerns prompted this action.
Consumers with Homebase vouchers should use them this weekend. Those with outstanding kitchen orders should expect contact from the retailer shortly.
The liquidators stated that instructions would soon be given to Homebase employees to start booking delivery slots for certain kitchen orders. Employees will have details about orders, including items that cannot be fulfilled.
Customers should receive calls regarding their orders starting Monday, December 2nd.
