Homeowner Finds 135 Million Lire in Wall Only to Discover It Is Worthless

A homeowner discovered 135.4 million Italian lire hidden inside a wall during house renovations, but the currency is now considered worthless by banking institutions.

The discovery occurred when the new owner of the property began remodeling work. According to reports from Focus Online and the Berliner Zeitung, the cash was concealed within the walls of the building. The homeowner described himself as being "sprachlos" (speechless) upon finding the 135.4 million lire.

Bank Valuation of the Italian Lire

Despite the high nominal value of the discovery, the money holds no current market value. The Berliner Zeitung and Berliner Kurier report that when the homeowner approached a bank to exchange the currency, he was informed that the notes are worthless.
